It’s a tradition in our house that for your birthday breakfast you get donuts from our local donut shop. Making them at home is something that I have always wanted to know how to do but figured it would be a tremendous amount of work and that they probably wouldn’t taste all that good. But I had to try. I searched the internet for recipes and after trying several different ones finally decided upon this one as our families favorite.
They can be time-consuming when you figure in the amount of time it takes for the dough to rise twice, cutting them out and also the time it takes to fry them because you can only fry two or three at once but they are totally worth it. Depending on how big you make them you should be able to get 2-3 dozen donuts from this recipe. I used my biscuit cutter for the outside and my apple corer for the hole in the center. You don’t have to have a special donut cutter, anything round will do.
Another good thing about this recipe is that it does not include milk or butter. I have a friend whose son is allergic to dairy and therefore he can’t eat a lot of donuts but these are made with shortening and water so there is no problem with his allergies.
- 3 eggs
- 6 cups flour
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 4 tablespoons yeast or 2 compressed yeast cakes
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 teaspoons white corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons hot water (or more if you prefer a thinner glaze)
1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in 2 cups of warm water.
2. Add eggs, flour, salt, sugar and lard to yeast mixture.
3. Mix well.
4. Cover and let rise until doubled (about one hour).
5. Roll out to 1/2″ thick, cutting with a doughnut cutter.
6. Let rise again, 30-45 minutes. The donuts will be “fragile” after they rise the second time and I have found it best to allow them to rise on something that you have sprayed with cooking oil and dusted with flour. If not, their shape distorts when trying to get them picked up.
7. Fry until golden on one side then flip and do the other side. This takes just a few minutes per side. I used my electric skillet with about 1 – 2 inches of shortening in it to fry the donuts.
8. Drain on paper towels and dip in glaze while donuts are still warm.
That’s all there is to it. Easy to make, taste delicious and check out how fantastic they look.
