Character Cards to Use When Praying With Your Kids

After I shared a post a couple of weeks ago about starting devotions with your kids, reader Sonja asked if I could share the character cards we use when praying with our little ones.

UPDATE: I've created 20 FREE printable character cards for you to download and pray with your children!

A few months ago, I made a simple prayer box with an inexpensive index card holder I got at Walmart. I stuck the words "prayer cards" {my son thought that should be the title} on the front with some scrapbooking stickers we had lying around.

Inside, we have a packet of index cards with two different subjects: family members and friends we want to remember in prayer and "character cards". These cards have written on them character qualities that we encourage our children to pray about! It reminds us that not only does God want us to pray for people but also for our spiritual life, attitudes and behaviors.
Some of the spiritual disciplines written on our character cards:
  • Love for one another
  • To encourage one another
  • Teachable hearts
  • Love for God
  • Fruits of the Spirit (each on a separate card)
  • Obedience with a happy heart
  • Thankfulness
  • Praise
  • Peacemaking
  • Forgiveness
  • Humility
  • Growing in wisdom
It's important for us to remind our children that we can't "muster up" these qualities on our own. We need the Holy Spirit to nurture them in us! Philippians 2:13 tells us, "for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose."

A reader reminded me that you could also write a Bible verse or reference on each card to go along with the character quality on that card! Then you could learn the verses together as a family.

What are some ways you encourage prayer with your children?

  10. Great idea! Love it and pinned it!
It is so good to teach them to pray specifically like this. We also ask our children specific prayer requests, and then sometimes encourage them to keep them in mind while we pray together a psalm.

  16. I love this idea. We worked on our cards this evening. I added a scripture reference (bite size for my 5-yr-old) for each characteristic to emphasize to her that it's God's will for us to grow in these particular qualities. Let me say it was also very convicting for me too to see some of these on paper; some that I need to be working on and praying about in my life as well. I think this will be a great tool to help us pray with more purpose together as a family.
