Artisan French Bread with Flax

Recently my friend Stacey gave me a recipe for french bread made with flax. We love using flax around here so I knew I wanted to try it. But I’d never shaped french bread before, I’ve just made regular bread in my bread machine.

I found a great tutorial on how to shape and bake artisan french bread. (There is a secret step that makes the crust just beautiful!) I used this method and made a tweak to the recipe. We’re taking baby steps to using all whole wheat flour so I substituted it for some of the all-purpose.

Artisan French Bread with Flax

1 1/4 c. warm water
1 T. oil
2 c. all-purpose unbleached bread flour
1 1/4 c. whole wheat flour
1/4 c. flax
1 1/2 t. sugar
1 1/4 t. salt
2 t. yeast1 egg white
1 t. water

Place ingredients in your bread machine in the order recommended by manufacturer. Choose the dough setting. When the cycle is done, form the dough into a french bread loaf.  This recipe makes one loaf.

Mix egg white and water together and brush over bread dough. Let rise and bake according to the tutorial

Lesson Learned: I baked mine for 20 minutes at 450 F, but I should have done it for only 15 minutes. It probably would have stayed softer longer if I’d baked for less time. I used a meat thermometer to test the internal bread temp, as recommended in the tutorial.
Great for dipping in oil, making delicious french toast or drizzling with honey. Enjoy!

Stacey and her family grow and sell flax from their farm! It’s a very healthy and delicious addition to your diet (you can find more recipes using flax here). Their family business is called Skandia Mills. They offer free shipping and sell flax milled or whole, in individual or bulk sizes.

Yummy! I’ve made homemade bread since I was a child in my mom’s kitchen, but never tried dipping it in oil until this past week. It’s amazing! And somehow, the rich olive oil and spices helped me not even want my evening dose of chocolate (to which I was getting way too attached!)

This bread looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it. :)

Hmm, I should try curbing my chocolate craving with bread and oil too–great suggestion! Hope you enjoy the bread :)
